When surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues, do you feel embarrassed by your gapped teeth? If so, you’re not alone. Unwanted spaces that form between teeth may be viewed as “adorable” and “cute” when you are young; however, as you grow older and reach adulthood, they can lead to a decline in self-esteem and oral health. At Dental Center of Westport, our team of professionals can use Invisalign to not only close the gap but also improve your appearance and decrease your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

Problems That Can Occur with Gapped Teeth

If you are concerned about developing gum disease, tooth decay, or bad breath, it’s time to do something about your gapped teeth. No matter the reason for its formation (i.e., large frenulum, thumb sucking or overuse of a pacifier as a child, small or missing teeth, etc.), you may experience difficulty brushing or flossing to remove harmful bacteria and food particles that can accumulate and break down your tooth enamel. As a result, spaces between teeth can cause further harm the longer they are left untreated.

How Does Invisalign Work?

By opting for Invisalign to eliminate the gap, these clear aligners can shift your teeth in the appropriate direction, bringing them closer together and removing unnecessary space that can cause food to become stuck and raise your risk for common dental problems.

These clear trays are fabricated according to your smile. Lab technicians use impressions taken of your teeth to create a series of aligners that will move your teeth in the right direction and ultimately, give you a smile you are proud to show off to others.

You will need to wear your customized aligners at least 20-22 hours each day for 1-2 weeks at a time. Once you are finished with one set, you will need to switch to the next one in the series so there is an adequate amount of pressure being applied to your teeth. This will keep them moving and put you one step closer to a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing smile.

On average, you can expect to wear your Invisalign aligners for 12-18 months. In the end, you’ll notice a dramatically different smile.
